Crane Falcata

This is an early style crane head falcata. The forged blade has fullers scraped in by hand and remain dark from after the heat treatment. The blade cross section changes from triangular to an off set lenticular when the false edge starts. The hilt slabs are antler.

These are the progression pictures that I took of the first two falcata blades that I have been working on this summer. I have had these designs finished for close to five years, but have put off doing them until they could be done correctly. The first will be a crow or raven head and the other a crane head. These projects are a collaberation between myself and Mark at Ollin Sword design. After final forging, these were sent to Mark and he is in the process of grinding the blades and scraping in the fullers. After heat treatment, he will do final grinding and send these back to me for hilts.
These are the blades in rough forged form - they receive more forging before being sent to Mark at Ollin Sword.
It is likely that I will be keeping the crow headed one for myself and the other will be available for sale. If there is enough interest in these I may also do more with slightly different blade shapes and animal heads.

This is the crow falcata once it has been cleaned up a bit. Mark has drawn on the upper fuller and begun shaping the blade.
The first fuller has been scraped in here.
The lower fuller is marked on the blade.
The second fuller is being scraped in here.

These blades are forged, fullers scraped in by hand, and in general just more labor intensive than other things I have done.
These are the blades post heat treat with most of the clean up on the blades done.
