La Tène I Rivet Hilt

Mark from Ollin Sword Design made the blade for this sword.  The hilt shape follows what we see from the few remaining near complete and partial organic hilts from the period.  Yew wood was used for the two slabs that are riveted together and the pommel plate is forged wrought iron.

The front side of the hilt features higher domes then the back side, something often seen through-out the entire La Téne on rivet hilts.  This sword follows examples seen through-out most areas during this time, but is a style that was very common in the region that are now Northern Italy. 

 

The shape and size of the blade is based on one from Navarro and features

a strong medial ridgeline ground from 3/8" stock.

Some of the originals we see often times have a pommel plate, but lack a guard plate.  This is rarely done on reproductions because it is thought of as a weakness, however that is not the case.  After studying pictures of originals I realized that the blade shoulders rested on the shafts of the rivets or that the shafts would pass just through the blade shoulders.  I decided that I would go with the option of the shoulders resting against the rivet shafts. 

   

   The first hilt that I worked on for this sword had designs picked specifically that

were more common to Northern Italy.
