Spatha

This is a blade that is based on a Roman spatha blade that I had a chance to study and use as a guide. The blade was a commission from Mark Grzybowski of Ollin Sword Design who did a great job at following our measurements of the original.
My plans for mounting this blade changed greatly since starting this project. Originally I had wanted to do some of the Piggott types, but finally I decided that I wanted to stick with a known hilt type for this type of blade. This led me to the Vimose II finds and the example I picked. I used a tiger striped cherry for the hilt. Instead of showing distinct bands of figure, most of the hilt is a solid figure. This prismatic effect is very hard to capture in photographs though. The wood has been sanded to a high finish and treated with boiled linseed oil.
